Mary Stuart, one of the most famous figures in history and the renaissance monarch who boldly ruled Scotland during a time of religious strife and political upheaval throughout the British Isles, takes center stage on this delicately illustrated ceramic ornament. I used a variety of sources for my illustration, including a portrait by Francois Clouet and her death mask. Of course I had to include some Scottish thistle too.

This ornament is in my Tudors section because she was a huge player in the Tudor dynasty. Mary's grandmother was Henry VIII's sister, Margaret Tudor. Her mother was Marie de Guise and her father was James V. After years in captivity, at the age of 44, she was executed on the orders of Elizabeth I in 1587. Mary’s son, James VI and I, united the crowns of Scotland and England and every British monarch since can trace their genealogy back to Mary, Queen of Scots.
