This scene captures the final, heart-throbbing moments for Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth in the 1995 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. Having just read Captain Wentworth’s letter addressed to “Miss A.E.”, Anne now knows that Captain Wentworth is “pierced” by her soul. He thinks and plans only for her. Now, out in the street, they are one, and cannot be distracted even by the circus as it goes marching by.
